Benefits of using car greases

" alt="">

Many vehicle components are constantly exposed to friction and operate under high load. Solid or liquid lubricants are used to protect parts from damage. There is a type of lubricant that is a combination of the properties of both products. These lubricants are called greases and they retain their shape under normal conditions, and form a protective film under the influence of high temperatures and loads.

What is grease?

These lubricants are approximately 70-90% synthetic or mineral base oils, which ensure the required fluidity. Various additives are used to enhance the properties and thickeners are used in the base to preserve the structure. They account for up to 20% of the total weight of the product. The following substances may be used as thickeners:

  • Calcium, aluminium, lithium and other salts of carboxylic acids;
  • A complex combination of these salts;
  • Inorganic components;
  • Synthetic substances.

The plastic properties of the product depend on the type of oil and thickener. Corrosion resistance, moisture resistance and mechanical stability are determined by structural modifiers present in the composition of car greases. Inorganic solids are also added to the product to impart anti-friction and sealing properties.

Grease properties and characteristics

Lubricants of this type are widely used in the maintenance and repair of various vehicle systems. Greases can be applied to bearings, transmission components, propshafts, starters and alternators. The product is suitable for hubs and drive shafts, brake callipers and planetary gears, as well as all other mechanisms operating at high temperatures with high friction. The benefits of using car greases are determined by the following properties:

  1. Colloidal resistance – resistance to base oil separation;
  2. Chemical stability – the ability to block oxidation and corrosion processes;
  3. Moisture resistance – preservation of properties in direct contact with water;
  4. Thermal stability – preservation of all functions at extremely high or low temperatures.

Car greases have a denser texture than other types of lubricants. The variety of products and their characteristics means you can choose the right option for every application.

Types of automobile greases

The classification of greases is based on the type of thickener. Products with a lithium additive are unstable to moisture, but have a long service life and can be used under significant loads. Sodium, sodium-calcium compounds successfully withstand the effects of high and low temperatures. Aluminium lubricants have antioxidant properties, Teflon lubricants have dielectric properties, and silicone lubricants are water–resistant. Products with a barium thickener are resistant to shear stress, while polyurethane products are environmentally friendly.

In terms of application, greases are distinguished as follows:

  • Friction greases, which help to avoid slipping;
  • Anti–friction greases, which reduce friction and slow down the wear of parts;
  • Sealing greases, which have a sealing effect;
  • Protective greases, which prevent the development and spread of corrosion.

The group to which a grease belongs, as well as the operating temperature range, type of thickener and texture, and other properties, are indicated on the label.

Advantages of greases

The key advantage of greases is their ability to exhibit solid and liquid properties under various conditions. These compounds form a strong protective film even on vertically positioned parts, do not leak out and have other advantages, such as:

  1. Highly protective properties – the lubricant prevents damage to mechanisms and extends their life;
  2. Durability – the product retains its properties during prolonged storage or use;
  3. Adhesion – the lubricants ensure good adhesion to surfaces;
  4. Uniform distribution – such products are characterized by high penetrating power.

The advantages of greases include reliable protection of mechanisms from scores and deposits. Distinguished by their simplicity and ease of use, these products help to reduce friction, vibration and noise levels in automotive units. Greases are resistant to the aggressive effects of chemical compounds, suitable for most components, therefore they are considered versatile. With the help of these formulations, starting or stopping movable components in vehicles is a simple process.
